Primary Elections

8/4/2009

Today is the primary election and Detroiters will be casting their ballots for Mayor, City Council, Charter Commission, City Clerk and School Board. The field is quite crowded so pack your patience and you go through the ballot to find your favorite candidates.

Mayor’s Race: There are six candidates in the race for mayor, including incumbent Mayor Dave Bing. The two people with the greatest number of votes will move on to the general election in November.

City Council: All 9 council seats up for grabs in this primary election and only 6 of the incumbents are seeking re-election. The list of Detroiters who say they want to make a difference and represent the citizens of Detroit is vast and diverse. There are 167 certified names on the ballot that run the gamut from auto workers, to police officers, radio and television personalities, ministers and so many others. The 168th name on the list is that of Monica Conyers who pled guilty to charges – but too late to have her name removed from the ballot. The question is – will Detroiters reelect her?

Charter Commission: The Charter Commission has 44 candidates and again 9 is the magic number. Eighteen of them will move on to the general election. The charge of the Charter Commission is to pen a constitution for the city of Detroit. Loopholes and vague language in the current charter made for a lot of speculation and disagreements during the Kilpatrick controversy.

There are also three candidates for City Clerk and 14 candidates for at large seats for Detroit’s School Board.
