Employees Charged8/12/2009
Some former DPS Employees dealing with major legal problems...That's Tonight Big Story. Today, Wayne County's prosecutor announced charges against former employees the district believes stole money from DPS. My TV 20's Jorge Avellan has the story.
Wayne county prosecutor Kym Worthy anounced that five former DPS employees have been charged with embezzlement. The first three involved an employee by the name of Maria Roscoe who worked at the districts control office and two teachers aids, Sandra Carter and Roscoe Smiley. Kym Worthy "There was apparently a mechanim were you could work after hours as a coach, and you would receive special coaches pay. Well Ms. Roscoe again, also known as Ms. Starkey, again controlled these funds in the matter that I described earlier and Ms. Carter and Mr. Smiley received funds and they never worked as a coach in any capacity." The fourth person charged is Tammy Henry, a food coordinator for the district. Kym Worthy "She was basically responsabile for collecting and counting money from lunch room sales. And she talk off with these lunch room sales allegedly, and stole them." And the last employee charged was Lisa Williams, a clerical worker. Kym Worthy "She basically, we are alledeging, wrote and cashed fifteen checks to herself in the amount of $10, 600. And in addition to that, we are alledgeing make seventeen withdraws for the amount of $14, 650 dollars for a total of over twenty-five thousand dollars." The five DPS employees charged are expected to turn themselves in to the authorities tomorrow. If convicted they could be sentenced to 10 years in jail. And speaking of Detroit Public Schools, it along with other districts may soon lose its school board. State legislatures are debating whether or not they should approve a bill that would convert all public schools into charter schools. This means all the public districts in Michigan will no longer need a school board. If approved, the boards could be eliminated as early as next year. More Good Stuff |
