Health Care At Odds8/17/2009
President Obama is finding himself at odds tonight with members of his own party and the health care plan he's backing...That's tonight's big story at 10. House Democrats are promising to pass health care legislation that includes a government run public option. The President indicated over the weekend he's willing to drop the option to get a health care bill passed. My TV 20's Dave Leval shows us how opponents are keeping up the pressure on lawmakers to not approve the plan.
"The town hall meetings really haven't been a place where we can get information." That's why several hundred people pack Kellogg Park in Plymouth. They are seeking answers to what Congressional Democrats and President Obama are proposing in their health care plan. Sharon Lollio/Organizer "We are not an angry mob, we're not Nazis, we're not brownshirts, we're just concerned Americans saying slow down." The comments are in response to remarks recently made by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi regarding protestors. Nancy Pelosi/(D)-Speaker of the House "I think they are astroturf, you be the judge, of carrying swastikas, symbols like that into town hall meetings." Protestors are also upset by other remarks made by other Democratic Lawmakers, including Detroit Congressman John Conyers. Rep. John Conyers/(D)-Michigan "I love these members that say read the bill. What good is reading the bill if it's a thousand pages, and you don't have two days or two lawyers to read what's in the bill?" "Mr Dingell? Let's see who," Dearborn Congressman John Dingell is also finding himself interupted at his town hall meetings. Rep John Dingell/(D)-Michigan "That kind of behavior is very, very hurtful to democracy because you can't dny our people their right to talk to their congressman, it's the wrong thing." Dennis Waling/Demonstrator "They people that put them in are they very people out here now." Voters are warning lawmakers their jobs are on the line if they don't listen to opponents of the health care plan. In Plymouth, Dave Leval, My TV 20 News at 10. A health care bill has yet to be introduced into the US Senate. Democratic leaders there claim the public option will not be included in their version. Another rally takes place Saturday from noon until 2 in the afternoon at the Walmart in Canton. More Good Stuff |
