Detroit Job Fair

8/18/2009

The unemployment rate in Michigan keeps rising. It's currently over fifteen percent. To help out, a Detroit congresswoman held a job fair that focused on an industry that's in desperate need of workers. My TV 20's Jorge Avellan has more.

Cecily Hudson
"It pays well money and your always going to need someone in the medical field."

That's why so many unemployed people attended a medical job fair today at River Rough High school.

It was sponsored by congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick.

Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick
"We're leading the nation in Michigan with over fifteen percent unemployment. Healthcare is the largest growing employment sector so we had to have them here."

The demand for medical workers is so high, that local colleges and univeristies now offer special medical programs to it's students.

Mathew Green
"Our Northwest Campus, is our health science focus. There we have a four month medical program. We have EMT, paramedics, nursing, surgical tech and OTA."

And that's exactly, what employers are looking for, medical training.

Joan Harrison
"It does require training, we all want trained technicians working when we are in the hospital."

Those who are unemployed don't mind getting the training.

Ashlie Godfrey
"I wasn't really looking into being in the medical field. I had no interest in being in the medical field but now that I'm into it. Due to our economic crisis a whole lot better, we need to adjust to something. It use to be the cars, now it's the medical field."

The number to Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatricks office is 313-965-9004. Once again, 965-9004.
