State Fair's Future

8/18/2009

Organizers are promising it will be the biggest and best ever. But, they are not saying if this year's Michigan State Fair will be the last. Organizers unveiled the line-up this morning at the fairgrounds. There's been a lot of doubt concerning the fair's future since Governor Granholm announced earlier this year, there will be no more state funds for it. Organizers point out the fair serves the community in more ways than just attracting hundreds of thousands of fans.

Bob Porter/G.M., MI State Fair
"The DNR Park has dealt with 2,000 children this year, fishing and natural outdoors training, archery and so forth. The Joe Dumars Center, there are many kids who come in there, rather than being out on the street."

Operators tell us state funds account for roughly 20 percent of the fair's budget. This year's Michigan State Fair opens August 28, and runs thru September 7. You can log onto tv20Detroit.com for a schedule of the events and concerts.
