More layoffs Announced

8/31/2009

Thousands of city workers will soon be out of work as Detroit tries to dig itself out of a massive budget hole. That's tonight's big story at 10. Mayor Dave Bing says he needs to eliminate the citys 275 million dollar deficit by making cuts in the workforce and public bus services. My TV 20's Jorge Avellan has more on the layoffs and reaction from unions.

Today, mayor Dave Bing announced that one thousand city employees will be laid off on September 26th.

This after most labor unions that represent city workers declined a ten percent pay cut suggested by the mayor.

Dave Bing
"I need to say straigh forward, that these or not temporary lay-offs. I've got to reduce the workforce in the city of Detroit. Some union are moving forward negotiations are going better but I don't want to initiate right now exactly who we have TA's with."

As a result, some unions such as AFSCME Local 207 may go on strike.

Jon Riehl
"Our union is definitely considering the issues of striking and continuing our protests. All of our options are available and I think that the most important thing right now is for the members and the citizens to realize these cutbacks hury the community and the mayor is dead wrong is doing it."

The mayor also announced that public bus services will be cut.

Dave Bing
"By the tenth of September we will put a plan togther, and that plan will be some bus routes probably being eliminated, we will continue to have bus service on the weekends."

Jon-Keith Jordan
"I think that its sheer insensitivity to the needs of the public and I am really thankful that we have an election coming up this Novemvber because we don't have to wait for years to remov the mayor."

And for those who stay on the job, the mayor is considering furlough days to further reduce the deficit.
