Michigan College Tuition Act9/14/2009
Could gambling revenue send your kids to college? Good evening, I’m Melissa Long. One state lawmaker says attending college in Michigan could soon be free for most high school students in the state. My TV20’s Jorge Avellan tells us about the proposal.
State Rep. Fred Durhall “Preferably, college education in Michigan is not readily accessible to the general population.” That’s why today, state representative Fred Durhall jr. introduced a Michigan College Tuition Act, that if approved by state legislatures, it would allow most high school seniors in our state to attend college without paying tuition. State Rep. Fred Durhall “First, the student must have lived in Michigan for at least 5 consecutive years prior to graduating high school. Second, the student must have an accumulative grade point average of 2.5. Third, the student must be accepted into one of Michigan’s public or private vocational and technical schools, community colleges or universities.” The tuition grants would most likely be paid by 3 new state lotteries that Durhall wants to create. State Rep. Fred Durhall “The creation of three annual super-lottos, which will be strictly devoted to putting money in the lock box for financing the education.” College students who are currently paying for school, believe the tuition bill will a major financial saver for future students. Djuan Black “With the cost of tuition…it seems to be going up every year...the rising cost of tuition, even at a community college. It’s been rising every year, and keeping up with the rising cost, not only that, maintaining a living…you know, you have to live, you have to eat, breathe, meal and those things…maintain daily living.” If state legislatures approve the bill, it would then be placed on the November ballot where you will decide if its put into effect or not.
