New State Budget

9/28/2009

Tomorrow, Michigan legislatures will return to the state capital to finalize the state budget before their Wednesday deadline.

My TV 20’s Jorge Avellan spoke with a representative from Detroit about which departments face budget cuts.

With a 2.8 billion dollar Michigan State deficit, legislatures are still debating about what needs to be cut to balance the 2009-2010 budget.

State representative Fred Durhal Junior from Detroit, said public safety departments such as police and fire will be affected.

Fred Durhal Jr.
"Our current target cut is 163.4 million, that is a very tough cut for the city of Detroit. It equated to 38 million dollars in revenue sharing reduction. What does that mean for those departments? Well, it means for those departments, in terms of the city government having that money to kind of pay for those services, it won’t be there. It could mean lay-offs"

Some Detroit residents are worried about the possibility of those lay-offs.

David McCall
"That’s an area that should be untouched. Like I said, I feel that they can find money elsewhere without sacrificing our safety."

The states Medicaid payment program is also in jeopardy.

Thousand are at risk of losing medical benefits.

But Durhal believes that even if legislatures don’t cut too much from Medicaid, the state will still be affected financially.

Fred Durhal Jr.
"I think what we are going to see is a problem with paying for people. People are going to continue to go to the emergency rooms and do the things that they have been doing and we are just going to have to find ourselves during this budget o shift money around to pay for the things that need to be paid for."

The states jails and public libraries are also expected to lose millions of dollars to help balance the budget.
