POSITIVELY IMPACTING THE COMMUNITY: A WALK FOR EDUCATION
AWFE in Detroit, MI, Organized by The National Society of Black Engineers
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will be hosting “A Walk For Education” (AWFE) in Detroit, MI on Saturday, April 25th, 2009 from 8:30am-1:00pm. The walk will begin at the official AWFE site located at the Northwest Activities Center (18100 Meyers, Detroit, MI 48235).
The goal of this event is to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education, particularly in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Volunteers will walk door-to-door in the community surrounding the Northwest Activities Center, between 6 & 7 mile and Wyoming & Outer Drive, distributing information about area college admissions, GED and SAT/ACT prep, scholarships, financial aid, etc. for traditional and non-traditional students.
Who can participate? Anyone who believes that continuing education is of utmost importance especially in our Nation’s current status: a NSBE member, a Greek sorority and fraternity member, a company representative, a church member, and a college graduate as well as a non-college graduate. The goal is to exceed 300 volunteers from various colleges and throughout the community. This will truly be a unique experience, which will allow the participants to have an unprecedented role in increasing the number of minorities in local colleges and universities. Everyone is needed in this effort.
This is not a walk to raise money, but an investment to positively impact the community by spreading the word that higher education is essential to the betterment of Detroit and our Nation overall. It is time to take action to direct the Detroit community to educational opportunities to excel academically and succeed professionally.
