Coast Guard Cutters Open to Public

January 20, 2012

DETROIT, Mi. (My TV 20 News at Ten) --- They cut the ice like a hot knife through butter.

Well, not exactly.

But they're certainly pretty amazing just the same -- the U.S. Coast Guard's fleet of ice breakers that keep key shipping lanes in the Great Lakes open during the worst of winters..

Now's your chance to see how they do it --- hop on board one of three U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker ships that's welcoming visitors this weekend.

The Coast Guard is offering free tours tomorrow from 10 A.M. to noon and then again from 2 PM to 4 PM right behind Cobo Center in Detroit.

The ships are docked on the Detroit River to help with safety during the North American International Auto Show.
