Detroit Mi (My TV 20 News at 10) – Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon stood with religious leaders and business owners requesting Detroiters to not shoot celebratory shots from their guns at midnight this upcoming Monday night as they welcome the new year but to ring a bell instead. For the past 14 years the Bring in the New Year with a Bell not a Bang campaign has asked people to do this after a grandmother was fatally shot in her living room in 1997. Since her murder, there has not been a murder due to celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Eve.
The campaign is offering free door hangers with bells on them at certain stores throughout the city so you can bring your new year in with a ring instead of a bang.
