“Hairspray is a very funny show set in the 60’s that also has a lesson about the social injustices that took place at that time in American history,” said Mr. Gregory Cleveland, Walled Lake Western’s Choir Director and Producer of the musical. The cast and crew at Western strive to make each musical they perform as authentic to the Broadway production as possible. Acting Director, Ms. Kim Paullin said, "Jon Waters, the writer of the original Hairspray, created the role of Edna, Tracy's mother, to be played by a male. John Travolta played this in a very feminine manner in the movie version, however, our version will be more in keeping with the writer's original concept." This year’s show contains a lot of fast-paced dance numbers. “We have been teaching the students the dance routines starting with the highest-energy final number, ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’, and moving toward the beginning of the show to build their endurance”, said Ms. Dori Matkowski, Choreographer for the show and founder of Dance Dynamics located in Walled Lake.

About Hairspray
In Hairspray it's 1962 - the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion--to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, 'The Corny Collins Show' and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s. Only in Hairspray! Welcome to the '60s!
