New Facility to Provide Complimentary Services to Local Community While Educating Next Generation of Professional Counselors

Detroit, December 7, 2010 – The University of Phoenix Detroit Campus will unveil its new Counseling Skills Center on December 17, 2010. This center will offer complimentary counseling services to local residents with mild mental health conditions. The new counseling center represents the University’s ongoing commitment to offering valuable services to Detroit-area residents. According to a recent Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration report, more than 45 million Americans, or 20 percent of U.S. adults, were diagnosed with some form of mental illness last year.

“Mental health continues to be an understated national and local public health issue,” said Vice President and Director of the Detroit Campus, Jan Cardwell. “With a strong and growing academic program and expertise in mental health counseling, we are acutely aware of the need for these types of services and believe this center will provide real-life education and skills to our students while providing much-needed counseling assistance to our community.”

The new counseling center activities will be serviced as part of a practicum training program, which allows advanced student learners to conduct counseling sessions under the supervision of licensed professionals. Clients of the counseling center will have access to a program tailored to fit their specific mental health concerns.

“This Center provides an exceptional opportunity to support our community members needing this type of assistance and enrich the learning experiences our students will gain from this work. Our goal is to help our students master the skills and gain the experience they need to become effective, licensed professional counselors in Detroit,” Cardwell said.

Advanced counseling students are prepared to address mild mental health issues, including those that stem from:

• Career transition
• Conflict resolution
• Grief and loss
• Stress
• Anxiety
• Social Phobia
• Depression
• Relationship issues
The Counseling Skills Center Open House will be Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of Phoenix Southfield 1 Campus, located on 26261 Evergreen Road, Southfield, MI. The event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m.
