The UNCF Annual “Walk for Education” will celebrate 20 years of success on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the Belle Isle Athletic Field in Detroit at 8:00 a.m. This year’s annual 5k walk will mark its significant milestone with the highest goal in the history of the event - $350,000! The UNCF Annual “Walk for Education” is sponsored by the UNCF to raise funds for its 500 academic programs, 39 colleges and universities and the more than 65,000 students who attend them.
“When UNCF started the walkathon in 1988 we never imagined it would grow the way it has over the years,” said UNCF Area Development Director Leslie Andrews. “We have the distinct honor of having been the first indoor walk but with the growth of such incredible participation over the years, we can proudly strut on Detroit’s crown jewel, Belle Isle.”
The annual 5k walk is a broad-based community fundraising event in which thousands of individuals, families and organized teams participate in a non-competitive walk to raise much-needed funds for the UNCF. The Event Chairperson is Frank Taylor, Chairman of Southern Hospitality Restaurant Group and additional sponsors include GM, Comerica Bank, Miller Canfield, Chase Bank, Ford Motor Company, AAA Michigan, AT&T, McDonald’s, Seldom Blues and Visteon.
“This year is going to be special and I would encourage anyone that cares about young people and understands the importance of a good education to join us on August 2,” said Event Chair Taylor. “A college degree today is what a high school diploma was in the past for many careers and thanks to the UNCF many young people who might not have had an opportunity to pursue a college education will now have that chance.”
Walking isn’t the only thing going on at the 20th Annual “Walk for Education” and with 20 years to celebrate participants can expect a fun-filled day. Additional activities include:
• The UNCF Olympics
• Horseback Riding
• Team Captain Cook-off Contest
• Greek step show competition.
Individual walkers and groups of ten (10) or more individuals may participate as a team. Registration cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children (under 12 years old). All registered participants will receive the following:
• A $25 gift certificate to Seldom Blues compliments of the Southern Hospitality Restaurant Group
