Never Would Have Made it!
My Name is Gerard Brooks from Detroit, Mi. After a long day at work, I came home and was watching television. A commercial came across the screen saying that there was a contest to sing the Star Spangled Banner at a Tiger’s game and to also win $1000. The contest had been going on for a few weeks already so I actually entered the contest late. I went to the Television Station after work and there had to be hundreds of people who were at the auditions. After sitting and waiting my number finally was called. The contest was set up like American Idol. They had 3 judges who were very hard on us. The way the audition goes is you have at least 3 minutes to sing the song of your choice and if you were able to survive, the judges would have you sing different parts of the star spangled banner. The song that I sang for my audition is “Never Would Have Made It.” This song is actually the number 1 Christian song in the nation. I sang that and they had me to sing different parts of the star spangled banner. Fortunately, I survived and went to the next round. I sang 30 seconds of another song and went on to the next round. The last I round I couldn’t think of any other song to sing so I sang “America the Beautiful” and passed. All that were left in the competition were 10 contestants and 3 alternates. I was one of the alternates.
That next week Me and my family went out of town and when I got back I received a phone call stating that two of the competitors were no longer in the Competition. I was so honored to be in the top ten! I had to leave straight from work to get to Comerica Park and almost didn’t make it! The competition was held at Comerica Park at the Brush fire grill. All of the Competitors were giving it all that they had! They were really good. I chose to sing the same song that I sang for the first audition “Never Would Have Made It.” Everyone was so good! I remember sitting in my chair thinking ‘Well I guess I should leave now. I don’t have a chance! As I had that thought the MC called my name as one of the finalist! What a surprise! I and a young lady were chosen as the two finalists to sing in front of 20 to 30,000 people at Comerica Park.
Now the big day was finally here. I was nervous as all get out. I and the other finalist had tickets in the General Manager’s suite. It was amazing! Someone had advised me to sing another song because they thought no one could relate to the song that I chose; however I had to go with my gut because I felt strongly about singing that particular song. So I prayed and asked God and got my answer.
Well the Tigers lost the game so now it was time for us to go out on the field. Now that was one of the most amazing feelings I’ve ever had in my life. We sang behind home plate after the game in from of a sold out crowd of 30,000 tiger fans! It was unbelievable. I was 1st. I sang “Never Would Have Made It.” I was petrified before I started singing but as I sang all the nervousness went away. So to make a long story short, the crowd had to choose the winner. Whoever got the most applause wins the entire contest. They Host called my name and the folks would not stop cheering! I was so overwhelmed and excited you would’ve thought I won a million dollars. I was award the cash prize and I will be singing the star spangled banner at a Home Tigers Game. I’m blessed and grateful and I thank God for the Opportunity. “I never would have Made it” without him!
