Big Gifts for Detroit

Gun violence is the broadly defined category of violence and crime committed with the use of a firearm - assault with a deadly weapon. Detroit’s present this Christmas are free security RAC’s.

Gun violence includes intentional injuries & deaths, psychological and emotional harm, and the damage to property and economic well being from the deliberate misuse of firearms.

Gun violence also includes the unintentional injuries, deaths, or harm which could have been prevented with practical care in the use of guns.

So many deaths are to young people, particularly under the age of 35. Firearm deaths are second, only to motor vehicle accidents, as the major cause of death among young adults in Michigan and the U.S.

"Too many Detroit children have been killed or seriously injured by playing with unlocked firearms they've found in their own homes," say the Counsel of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity.

MaryAnn Mahaffey’s quote regarding gun crime was “We have to do something about the proliferation of hand guns,” and today there are those in Detroit that are heeding the call.

A community fair will be held the last Friday before Christmas to provide valuable tools and an early Christmas present to Detroit area citizens. In an effort to keep Michigan children safer, 1500 American storage RAC's will be provided free of charge to families Friday, December 21st from 11a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Historic Little Rock Baptist Church located at 9000 Woodward Ave.

"Keeping guns locked is a critically important step in preventing such tragedies." [Council of Baptist Ministers] American RAC prevents firearm theft, therefore protecting our children. The security storage RAC also locks tools, equipment, bicycles, and lawnmowers.

In addition to the gun lock give-away, numerous exhibitors will be onsite to provide families with information on a variety of community services, including legal advice, financial assistance, employment and educational opportunities, mentoring programs, crime prevention and much more.

Distribution of the RAC firearm protection system has been made possible through the donations of a partnership between Little Rock and numerous local businesses and organizations that provided funding to help families with valuable resources, information and solutions in many areas including health, wealth, legal issues and employment opportunities.
