Mayor Recall
There are several groups of people who are dissatisfied with the mayor of Detroit and want to see him removed from office. A hearing is schedule to take place on March 5th on the clarity of petition language that seeks the recall of K’wame Kilpatrick as Detroit’s mayor. The petition has been set forth before the Wayne County Elections Commission and will determine whether the petition is clear enough for people to understand why the recall is being sought. Should they find in the positive, recall planners can begin collecting signatures. Good News for Local Non-Profits! Thousands of grant dollars have made their way from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board to Metro-Detroit not for profit organizations working to improve the quality of life for Metro Detroit Youth. City Year Detroit received $25k for programs to help increase the number of students that make it to graduation – raising Detroit’s graduation rate. In Highland Park, the Reggie McKenzie Foundation received in excess of $57k to help elementary students avoid street violence. Lastly Lincoln Park schools received nearly $75k for money management educational programs. No Statute of Limitations on Murder For seventeen years Clinton Township Police have suspected that Michael George killed his wife in the back of their comic book store – that case finally the reaches the courtroom today. George is charged with the shooting death of his wife 32-year old Barbara in July, 1990. Jury selection begins this afternoon in this cold case that is expected to last more than 3 weeks. Former Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga is representing 47 year old Michael George in the case that has grabbed national attention. “Dateline” is expected to feature this case in a future case. Drunk Driving Official Third Time’s a Charm The New Haven Village President, Brett Harris, appeared in court on for an arraignment in his third-offence drunken-driving charge which is a 5-year felony. He made on comment or plea as he stood before the judge who entered a plea of not-guilt on his behalf. The pre-trial hearing is set to take place April 7th. Kid Reports Parent in Drunk Driving Case Kids and cell phones! Pawel Bozek who was arrested on a drunken-driving charge after his 13 year old daughter called 911 from the back set of the van he was driving, is scheduled to appear in court on All Fools Day [April 1]. Bozek was arrested February 11th as he was traveling south on I-75, reportedly bound for Florida when his daughter made the call. He was charged with operating while intoxicated. To Be Laid to Rest Mark Brown, the 10 year old boy whose body was pulled from a Rouge River tributary this past weekend, will be laid to rest on Saturday. The service will take place at 11am at the New Prospect Baptist Church [6330 Pembroke-Detroit] with visitation from Noon until 7pm Thursday and Noon to 8pm on Friday at Peace Funeral Home in Detroit [19530 W. 7 Mile – Detroit]. The plot in Woodlawn Cemetery is being donated to the family. Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Larry Foote, who grew up in Detroit is paying for young Mark’s funeral. Potholes Ate My Car!!! Melting snow is exposing bone-jarring potholes across Michigan, causing one of the worst pothole seasons on record. In addition, $300 million in cuts to the state's road and bridge program isn't bringing much relief. Here are three ways to take matters into your own hands and get back at those nasty potholes. Here are three things that you can do: 1. The Drive MI Campaign will pay you $318 for reporting the most mammoth pothole. Learn more at www.drivemi.org 2. MDOT has launched an online pothole reporting Website where you can report potholes in need of some attention.
