City Leaders Try To Draw More Visitors To Luna Pier Area

By WISE WMYD

DETROIT, Mich. (MyTV20Detroit) --- It's another quiet morning in Luna Pier.

Waves gently break over the rocks that help form the local Pier. City leaders are ready to make a few more waves. The reason can be found east of town across Lake Erie.

Millions of people seek their thrills at Cedar Point Amusement Park. It stands on its own island as part of Sandusky, Ohio. You have to drive to get there. But, Luna Pier leaders are considering starting a ferry service between Cedar Point and their pier.

Luna Pier City Administrator, Greg Stewart sees Luna Pier as the first
taste of Michigan. He says, "It's great being able to come in to Michigan and see what the rest of the state has to offer."

You can get to Cedar Point from Luna Pier in about 1 1/2 hours. But, city leaders predict the ferry service will cut that time in half. Plus, it would help the town get back to its roots in tourism.

Stewart said, "At one time, we were a stop between Detroit and Toledo. We had a trolley, an amusement park, and we had the pier. The pier was a nightclub. We had Count Basie come out here."

More people may soon come, and not necessarily by road.
