The H1NI vaccine is now available in Wayne County. But as My TV 20’s Jorge Avellan tell us, not everyone will be able to receive it.

Today, Wayne County’s Health Department announced they’ve received their first H1N1 vaccine shipment.

Barbara Harris-Ellis
"We’ve received 75 hundred doses of the flue mist and five thousand doses of the injectable. Now we expect to receive more in the up coming weeks probably on a weekly basis."

But the vaccine, which is free of charge, is currently only available to a certain group of residents.

Talat Danish
"Pregnant women, children six months through adults of twenty four years of age, individuals who are taking care of infants six months or under, or at close contacts with such infants. Individuals 25 through 34 years of age who have underline chronic medical conditions."

If you currently don’t qualify to receive the vaccine, you can always follow some basic hygiene steps to prevent the H1N1 virus.

Robert Ficano
"There is no substitution for washing your hands and making sure you do as many times as you can during the day. If your are sick or your children are sick to stay home until they are over the flu. If your going to sneeze, I know the traditional way many people think is to sneeze in your hand but it’s actually to sneeze into your elbow."

But Wayne County wasn’t the only one providing H1N1 vaccinations today.

Medical workers at Oakland County also received them.

Dozens of first response employees such as paramedics and police officers got the shot throughout the day.

Oakland County officials say it’s important these individuals get the vaccine because if they get sick, it’s hard to replace them.

KATHY FORZELY
OAKLAND COUNTY HEALTH OFFICER
"If our first responders become ill with the flu we will not have people to be able to respond to emergencies and this is something we need to make sure is covered right up front in our distribution plan."

Currently, the vaccine is only available for first respond workers in Oakland County.
