River Rouge’s Fire department says paving asphalt is what caused a fire this morning at the Michigan Marine Terminal. Firefighters rushed to the terminal after an oil tank inside the storage facility exploded while a chemical team cleaned an asphalt leak.

Officials say the asphalt caught on fire which quickly spread to the tank.

CHIEF ROBERT ALDERMAN
RIVER ROUGE FIRE DEPARTMENT
"We out approximately fifteen hundred gallons of foam on it immediately, which was able to knock it down, as you see now, it’s just a matter of cooling, the cooling period. And that knocks the flame down."

Environmental officials say the air quality in River Rouge was not affected by today’s fire.
