Today, mayor Dave Bing announced a new plan to help decrease school violence. My TV 20’s Jorge Avellan has the details.

In his latest attempt to decrease school violence, mayor Dave Bing announced the creation of an organization called “ATOM”, short for Advancing Through Organized Movements.

It’s a group made up of twelve Detroit community youth organizations that help kids stay off the streets.

Mayor Dave Bing
"We need the leadership and the involvement of men in our community to let our young people, spefically young men to know that there are folks out here who care about them and a lot of the things that they are doing right now is unacceptable. We don’t know all of the problems but we want them to understand that we are a resource for them."

Mayor Bing believes ATOM will help decrease school violence.

Mayor Dave Bing
"Absolutely we think that this is going to decrease school violence. We’ll be working with DPS, we’ll be working with the Detroit police department, all of these people who are grassroots into neighborhoods all across the city."

Those who will run ATOM plan to use sports as a way to engage it’s members.

Benny White
"I know most men in this city if it weren’t for sports, they would not be the lawyers the doctors and go in with any profession. So I think that sports play a vital role in young people’s lives. Everyone can’t play a specific role but you can get involved and I think it teaches your character, teamwork, learning hoe to fail and get back up."

If you would like to become a member of the ATOM organization call 313-224-3524.
