Homes For Our Troops

Some volunteers are waging a battle against Mother Nature tonight and time. They are racing the clock to help a local soldier wounded in the War in Iraq. My TV 20's Dave Leval shows us how they are giving back to a man who was willing to give up his life for his country.

Volunteers pound the boards, while others tote more than that barge along Downing Street in Macomb Townhip. The rain is not stopping them from their mission of building hope, and a home for one of America's finest. Specialist Alex Knapp lost both of his legs to a roadside bomb in Iraq in March 2008.

"I think it's incredible for a nice chilly raining morning in Michigan to see so many people come out and volunteer time to help me is amazing."

The house is being built free of charge to help Alex overcome the obstacles he's faced since he came home from Iraq. It's the latest call to arms for members of "Homes for Our Troops." Volunteers build homes for severely injured veterans.

"It's the least we can do to pay back the men and women who have been wounded."

Volunteers charge ahead in what many would consider a difficult task,
completing the home in three days. But, workers are not about to let Mother Nature prevent them from completing the job.

Gill
"There's a lot of men and women downrange right now in worse weather than this, worse circumstances."

It's their way of saying thanks to those who help defend the country. In Macomb Township, Dave Leval, My TV 20 News at 10.

Organizers tell us they plan to hand over the keys to the house Sunday
Afternoon. 43 houses have been built since "Homes for Our Troops Program" was created in 2004. Alex's is one of 30 that is currently being built around the country. "Dunkin’ Donuts" and "Baskin-Robbins" are major sponsors.
