Detroit Elections

In Detroit’s fourth election in one year, residents voted on everything from who will be mayor for the next four years to who will serve on the city council.

My TV 20’s Jorge Avellan interviewed voters regarding the importance of today’s general election.

Marcia Clowsson
"We have suffered enough, we need everybody to be honest, and forthright and care about the city, and I don’t believe many of the people who are in office and who are still in office do that."

That’s why today, thousands of Detroiters hit the polls to cast their ballot for their favorite candidate.

Hoping to see change in Detroit politics with an emphasize on the city council.

Luvella Williams
"The city is in trouble. I mean, the budget hasn’t been met and is basically because of the decisions that the city council has been making."

Austin Jordan
"We need a younger and not in age but just a newer mind set, with one or two incumbents, but it’s very important. The tope eighteen that was left, their very promising and I love the people that I voted for."

Other voted today, simply because they believe it’s their responsibility as an American.

Virdell King
"So many people have fought for us to have the right to vote, every citizen in the city of Detroit should get out and vote. That way you don’t have to sit at home and say what you should have done."

Mashuk Meah
"It’s important for me to vote because I live in Detroit, I take pride in my city and to sit around and not vote I really don’t have a voice to say the things I don’t like."

To ensure that all voting sites were running properly, Detroit’s city clerk visited all 527 today.

Janice Winfrey made quick stops at all polling locations through out the day to make sure they were operating correctly.

She told my TV 20 that everything was under control since the polls opened at seven AM this morning.

JANICE WINFREY
DETROIT CITY CLERK
"All of our precinct have opened up on time, our equipment is working very well, and we’re just looking forward to a very good election."

Over five hundred volunteers helped work the polls today.
