Are you one of the hundreds of thousands of families whose Christmas may be affected by the tough economy or unemployment? My TV 20’s Jorge Avellan tells us how the Salvation Army can help you this holiday season.

From now until December 11th The Salvation Army will accept applications for it’s “Christmas Assistance Program”.

Major David Womack
"When people qualify for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Assistance program, they receive food for their family to get them through the holiday, make it very nice and enjoyable for them. As well as toys for all of their younger children. And that helps family quite a bit because sometimes the difference between the cost of a few gifts and food could affect whether or not they could pay their rent or utilities that month."

Low income families interested in applying for the holiday program need to stop by Salvation Army Center and provide certain information.

Major David Womack
"By providing their proof of income, as well as a verification of household expenses, including rent, utility bills and so forth, with the proper photo identification and identification for children, which can be birth certificate or a social security card, each area Salvation Army unit, will take that, analyze that, consider the family, the income and then make the determination as to whether or not a family is qualified."

The Salvation Army encourages all families in need to apply, especially those who recently lost their jobs.

Major David Womack
"Don’t be afraid, don’t’ be shy. Come on in, that’s why we are here for. We want to make Christmas great for you and your families. We want Christmas to be a time of joy and a time of peace and if we could just take a little bit off of that pressure off come on in and apply."

If you’re interested in participating in the Christmas Assistance program remember that your application is due by December 11th. For My TV 20 News At Ten, Jorge Avellan.
