DETROIT (MyTV 20) - During the winter, many families use portable heaters as a source to keep their homes warm. But if not used properly, space heaters may cause deadly fires such as one that occurred Monday night in Detroit.
Authorities believe a propane space heater may have caused a fire on Calvert Street that left a 41-year-old man dead and another seriously injured.
Most winter fires in Detroit are caused by the improper use of space heaters. If you're using a space heater because you can't afford to pay for regular heat, the United Way of Michigan may be able to help you. For more information call 1-800-552-1183.
