Annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign Starts

DETROIT, MI (My TV20 News at 10) --- The world's tallest kettle has returned to Campus Martius.

The Salvation Army kicked off its annual Red Kettle campaign early Thursday morning, a little earlier than in previous years.

Army leaders tell us this year's goal is $8.5 million, a $300,000 from last year.

They point out 17.5% of Michigan is considered to be in poverty.

That numbers rises to 40% inside Detroit.

Both are considered 40 year highs.

Plus, the Salvation Army is seeing the need for help from area's once thought to be safe from poverty, the suburbs.
