DETROIT, Mi. (My TV20 News at 10) --- Three adults face involuntary manslaughter charges in the wake of an incident in which police say a four year old picked up a rifle and shot another four year old in the chest, killing the child.
The three adults were, according to police, watching the chldren in their home and the children had gone into another room where the rifle was located and that's where the shooting took place.
Here is the press statement from Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office:
"Charges Issued In Fatal Shooting of Four-Year-Old Boy
Today Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged three adults in connection with the fatal shooting of a four-year-old boy by a four- year-old girl.
On January 16, 2013, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Patricia Johnson, 53, Robert B. Richardson, 66 and Harvey Wilcher, 55 were in a home located in the 7100 block of Tuxedo in Detroit. All three adults were left in the house as guardians of the children who were present in the home. It is alleged that a loaded rifle was left accessible in a room where the children were playing, resulting in a four-year-old girl fatally shooting a four-year-old in the chest. The police were called to the scene and the boy was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Charges for Patricia Johnson
Involuntary Manslaughter, Child Abuse 2nd Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Felony Firearm.
Charges for Robert B. Richardson
Involuntary Manslaughter, Child Abuse 2nd Degree, Careless Discharge of a Firearm Causing Injury or Death, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Felony Firearm.
Charges for Harvey Witcher
Involuntary Manslaughter, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Felony Firearm.
"These are absolutely the right charges in this profoundly sad case. I hope that this sends another resounding message that guns and unsupervised young children will court nothing but disaster," said Prosecutor Worthy."
