DTE Energy says about 5,000 customers still have no power due to high winds and ice that hit southeast Michigan early Sunday.

As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, DTE has restored power to 99 percent of their 390,000 customers, according to a press release from the company.

Since Sunday, DTE has had over 1,600 workers in the field helping restore power to customers, with 600 more workers from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

DTE says the remaining repairs are among the most difficult, as they are tackling the smaller, more complex jobs that will restore power to the pockets of customers experiencing outages. The company says crews will work around the clock until power is restored.

The weight of ice on the power lines, coupled with high winds, caused more than 1,000 power lines to fall in Detroit and Wayne County, and hundreds more throughout the DTE service territory.

Customers will receive a notification when crews have been dispatched to their area.

Remaining outages are expected to be restored by end of day on Thursday.

Customers should stay at least 20 feet away from all power lines and anything they’re in contact with, and consider them live. They are extremely dangerous. Treat every downed power line as if it were energized. Customers should also heed the warning of yellow caution tape, which indicates there is a downed power line in the area. DO NOT CROSS YELLOW CAUTION TAPE. Never use a portable generator inside a home or business. It emits carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. Keep it outside, away from windows and doors, so the fumes won’t come in.
