An 18-year-old Detroit student’s joy ride at the wheel of a school bus ended shortly after he took off with the idled bus this morning at Golightly Career and Technical Center.

The boy had a minor accident inside the school parking lot, then crashed into a light pole and some other utility fixtures outside the school property, said Steve Wasko, spokesman for Detroit Public Schools.

He was taken to St. John’s Hospital with minor injuries, Wasko said. Detroit Police are handling the case.

Wasko said two quick-thinking employees, who were mowing the lawn at Golightly, rushed to the bus when it crashed and caught the boy as he tried to run from the scene.

The boy attends Kettering West Wing, a center for special education students, but was not in school this morning.

The bus driver had briefly stepped inside Golightly, leaving the bus idled outside the school. A mechanic had instructed the driver to keep the bus running because it had a battery problem, Wasko said.

Wasko said the good news is that no one else was involved or injured.

“And hats off to the two employees who went beyond the call of duty to detain and apprehend,” the student, Wasko said.
