Homicides Drop In The City

Today, Detroit’s Police Department announced homicides in our city have dropped since the new administration took over. My TV 20’s Jorge Avellan spoke with police chief about the change.

Detroit’s Police Department says 96 homicides were committed between July and September of 2009. That’s a drop from last year were 111 were reported during the same period. They’ve also closed more homicide cases than before.

Warren Evans
"The closure rate, which is the numbers of homicides that have been closed, went up dramatically in the last quarter, from about 28 percent in the previous quarter to about sixty percent, which is really the national average and we are extremely proud of our success."

Police chief Warren Evans attributes the decrease in homicides to providing more resources to units that help fight crime.

Warren Evans
"Beef up those units in the department that we think are important to get out in front of crimes, the ones that will get the guns off the streets, the ones that will make the arrest prior to shooting and homicides being able occur."

To help keep crime down, the police department says it needs to entire community’s help.

Warren Evans
"It’s absolutely invaluable, it can’t be done without the community’s participation period. We can do the best we can do but it will never be good enough without a community that buys in."

Crime in Detroit is also expected to drop this week with the enforcement of the Halloween “Angels Night” Campaign.
