Today, Detroit Public Schools and the Detroit Federation of Teachers agreed to extend teacher contracts. A previous contract extension which expires October 31st has been extended to November 21st.

This means teachers will remain in classrooms and not strike like they’ve threatened to do so in the past.

Teachers are asking for no pay cuts, smaller class sizes and recognition seniority when lay-offs take place.

ROBERT BOBB
DPS FINANCIAL MANAGER
"Seniority will always be a sticking point, there’s just fundamental disagreement. We believe that there are ways in which we can work that all parties can win."

DPS will resume it’s negotiations with the Federation of teachers next week.
