Members of the ACLU of Michigan will attend a federal appeals court hearing tomorrow in Ohio with an attempt to reestablish Affirmative Action in Michigan.

The group will travel to Cincinnati to argue that Proposal 2, which was approved by Michigan voters back in 2006 and banned affirmative action, violates the constitutions “Equal Protection Clause”.

ACLU lawyers say thousands of minority students in our state have been affected since the elimination of affirmative action.

MARK ROSENBAUM
ACLU ATTORNEY
"It affects them in number of ways, in the first instance, their not given the opportunity to have their identity considered in the same way that other people who identify themselves in ways other than to respect to race, are considered. And it also affects their choices and their options, many students of color who might ordinary file the universities in Michigan are very attractive place to be are deterred from doing that possibly because they know that they can’t truly express who they are."

The federal appeals court is not expected to make a decision tomorrow regarding whether or not affirmative action will be reestablished in Michigan.
