Historic Day for Governor Snyder

October 28, 2013

DETROIT, Mi. (My TV20 News at 10) --- It's a historic day for Governor Rick Snyder, but not because of what he did this morning.

He was at Second Ebenezer Church this morning, participating in the Neighborhoods of Hope Safety Forum. The forum aims to improve child safety in the child welfare system.

That even will be pleasant compared to the rest of his day.

He's testifying in Detroit's Chapter 9 bankruptcy hearing this afternoon. It's the first time a sitting governor is testifying in open court. He'll be asked about his role in authorizing an emergency financial manager to come in and run the city of Detroit. He hired Kevyn Orr to come in as the city's EFM. Orr testified Friday.

Snyder could be on the stand all afternoon, answering questions from
lawyers representing unions and pension funds that stand to lose the most in the Chapter 9 bankrupty.

Snyder says declaring Detroit bankrupt was a measure of last resort.
Judge Steven Rhodes will ultimately decide if that was the case and whether the bankruptcy can proceed.

More on the story tonight from reporter Jorge Avellan on MyTV20 News at 10.
