STERLING HEIGHTS, MI (My TV20 News at 10) --- U.S. Postal Service Police do more than dump trash at Freedom Hill Metro Park.
They are helping people avoid becoming victims of identity theft.
The Postal Service hosted its annual free shredding event as part of National Consumer Protection Week.
The event comes days after a new report finds identity fraud incidents increased by more than one million victims in 2012 from 2011.
12.5 million Americans had their identities stolen.
That cost them more than $21 billion, the highest amount since 2009.
The annual report Javelin Strategy & Research finds one person becomes a victim of i-d theft every 3 seconds.
The Postal Service will host another free shredding event, Wednesday, next to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office on West Hancock Street.
It takes place from 10am-5pm.
