Unions Losing Members

January 24, 2013

DETROIT, MI (My TV20 News at 10) ---The UAW and other unions still wield a lot of power.

They just have fewer members.

Nearly 11-and-a-half percent of the nation's workforce are represented by unions.

That's the lowest level since the 1930's.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds unions lost 400,000 members in 2012.

Michigan lost 10 percent of its unionized workers, as it fell to the seventh most-unionized state, from fifth in 2011.

Public sector unions took the biggest hit as cities and states cut back on unionized workforces because of the economy.
