High Blood Pressure11/11/2008Everyone's heard the term "high blood pressure"...but not everyone knows how serious and dangerous this condition can be. Identifying and treating high blood pressure is the subject of tonight's Medical Minute. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, that's why it's called the "silent killer." But it can cause serious problems such as stroke, heart failure, heart attack and kidney failure. That's why it is important for adults over age 20 to get screened at least once every two years. Blood pressure screenings are readily available in the community. You can evev get a monitor and take your blood pressure from home. However, you should discuss your results with your physician, especially if your blood pressure is more than 140/90. If your blood pressure is high, your doctor will discuss lifestyle changes, which are a good way to help control and prevent high blood pressure. Changes may include not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating healthy foods and managing stress. Medications are also a safe, effective and affordable option that may be necessary. Work with your doctor to design a plan that is best for you. For Medical Minute, I'm Dr. Carolyn Nelson.
