High Blood Pressure12/9/2008
High Blood Pressure is always a concern, but for women who are pregnant it demands special attention. That's tonight's Medical Minute. Having a baby is an exciting time, but special care during pregnancy is vital especially if you are diagnosed with high blood pressure. Preeclampsia is a condition that occurs during pregnancy affecting both the mother and the unborn baby. Symptoms include high blood pressure and a high level of protein in the urine. Women with this condition will often have swelling in the feet, legs and hands and it usually appears during the second half of pregnancy, although it can occur earlier. It is most often seen in first time pregnancies, pregnant teens and women over 35. Other risk factors include a history of high blood pressure in pregnancy, personal or family history of preeclampsia, obesity prior to pregnancy, carrying more than one baby, or history of diabetes, kidney disease, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis. Regular check-ups will help you have a safe and healthy pregnancy. For Medical Minute, I’m Dr. Angela Fleming. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
