January 20, 2011

Former Tigers pitcher Mark Fidrych has died in a freak accident. A family friend found him underneath a pick up truck at his Northboro home around 2:30. It looked like he was working on it at the time.

Fidrych was known as "The Bird" for his colorful antics on the mound. He was also famous for talking to himself and to the baseball. The Tigers drafted him in 1974. He won rookie of the year honors in 1976. A torn rotator cuff ended his career. He was 54.
