Iowa River Rises, Takes Over City Park

Channel: Weather

Location: City Park, Iowa City, Iowa

Half an hour before water began running over the spillway at the Coralville Reservoir yesterday, Iowa City Park was being hidden completely by raising flood waters. The closed Park Street bridge did not keep citizens from jumping the orange construction fence and crossing the bridge. Earlier in that day crews had been drilling holes through the concrete in the bridge to make the bridge less buoyant in the event of detachment from the land on either side of the river. Citizens are not encouraged to venture towards City Park, this trek not being made easy, with Dubuque Street being closed by the Mayflower Dorms, as well as Rocky Shore Drive, and Riverside Drive by the UI Art Museum taking water.
