A United State Postal Service mail carrier is accused of being involved in a drug trafficking scheme involving packages delivered from California to Washtenaw County.

Federal investigators say packages containing several pounds of marijuana were sent from San Jose, California to locations along Javar Chavers' postal route in Ann Arbor.

The locations would be sent to fictitious names, according to an affidavit. Chavers would allegedly mark the packages as delivered, but he would never actually deliver them.

In one case, according to the affidavit, police surveillance officers watched as Chavers met up with an alleged conspirator to give him the packages.

Chavers is charged with theft of mail matter by officer or employee and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

The alleged conspirator is charged with obstruction of mails generally and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
