(WXYZ) — Detroit City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday that extends the city's curfew for minors during the annual fireworks show on June 22.

Council approved the ordinance by a 6-2 vote, with Councilmembers Mary Waters and Denzel Anton McCampbell voting against the plan.

The ordinance was brought forth by Detroit Police and the Mayor's office after several weeks of so called "teen takeovers" and violence.

"I do not support the ordinance," said councilwoman Mary Waters during Tuesdays meeting. "I don’t want to see all of our children penalized for what just a few do."

"I support the ordinance. It is a very responsible ordinance. It’s an ordinance that’s going to protect who it needs to protect," said councilwoman Angela Calloway during the meeting.

The proposal has drawn mixed reactions from neighbors throughout the city. In the past few months, a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old were shot in two separate teen gatherings.

And last year, a 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman were shot as the annual Ford Fireworks were going off.

The annual event brings thousands of people downtown every year. Under the ordinance, the curfew for minors under 18 years old is now from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Previously, the curfew started at 10 p.m.

The proposed curfew expansion will only apply to select viewing areas in and around downtown Detroit, the riverfront and Belle Isle.

The current curfew, with limited exceptions for unaccompanied minors 15 and younger, is 10 p.m. Teens between 16 and 17 years old have an 11 p.m. curfew.

Detroit residents had a mix of opinions about the ordinance.

"I feel like it’s a good idea as well because we built the city up. We’re getting more and more people that come here and visit and I feel there should be some sort of curfew with a parent or whatever but not alone," said Kandy Guzman.

"I think that’s a great idea," said Julio Casaigne. "They could have more fun. The parent doesn’t have to be on them but at least be with your family and enjoy the day."

"Overall they still need places to go," said Jean Claud who believes the city should provide spaces for teens instead of imposing a stricter curfew. "I understand the concept but before they started building the new Cosm center, we had that little play area for teens to chill and have a good time out there with the courts and every thing else. So it’s kinda hard for them to gather in one place."

Businesses like Lafayette Coney, who have had a teen takeover unfold near their storefront, say they welcome the curfew.

"We worry about the customers. They're afraid to come in," said Ali Alhalmi. "We feel good when the police come round keep the people around here happy. It would be good, more safe."
