In a statement Thursday morning, the online shopping giant said it would be making the hires in fulfillment centers, sortation centers and customer service sites across 33 states.

In its statement, Amazon said thousands of its holiday hires were transitioned to regular full-time jobs within the company and that it "expects to continue that trend this year."

The news of Amazon's high amount of holiday hires comes in contrast to some big retailers. Macy's announced it would hire fewer holiday workers this year compared to 2016 and Walmart announced it wouldn't hire holiday workers at all, opting to give more hours to regular employees.

Meanwhile, Target announced it was hiring about 23,000 more holiday employees this year compared to 2016.
