Facebook and Instagram users around the world are unable to use the sites or apps due to an outage caused by a degraded API performance. The outage started to affect users around 11:15 a.m. ET. Since then, users have regained access but there are still a handful of users who cannot access their accounts.

According to the Facebook for developers status page, the status of the outage is "ongoing." Facebook says "We are currently experiencing an increased level of API errors. We are investigating the cause and we'll post updates when we have more information."

Down Detector, which reports website outages online, reported 40% of Facebook users were affected with a total blackout, 36% couldn't log in and 22% were having issues with the Facebook app at the peak of outage.

As far as Instagram goes, 54% of users couldn't access their news feed, 22% of users couldn't use the website and 22% couldn't even log in at the peak of the outage.
