A new law cracking down on porch pirates is now in effect in Michigan.

Introduced by Michigan state Sen. Jim Runestad, the new law will create state penalties for mail theft, giving more options for state prosecution.

A first offense is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail. A repeat offense is a felony, punishable by to five years in prison.

"The law will help provide peace of mind as the ability to prosecute and punish these thieves increases," Runestad said.
