PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) will be handing out toy octopuses outside of the Detroit Red Wings' season opener at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.

This isn't the first time the organization has asked Red Wings fans not to throw octopi on the ice. Just before the final game at Joe Louis Arena, the team sent a letter to the Red Wings, urging them to levy higher fines and ejection for fans throwing them on the ice.

Red Wings fans responded by throwing 35 octopuses on the ice for the final game.

The tradition dates back to 1952 and signified at the time the number of wings a team needed to win the Stanley Cup.

With the first regular season game at LCA on Thursday, you can expect a lot of flying octopi to hit the ice.
