The use of recreational marijuana is expected to become legal in Michigan on Thursday exactly 30 days after voters across the state said yes to Proposal One.

Retail shops aren't expected to open until sometime in 2020, but beginning Thursday, people 21 and older can buy or possess marijuana in the state.

People will only be allowed to have 10 ounces of pot kept at home. Anything over 2.5 ounces should be kept in a locked container. People can also grow up to 12 marijuana plants in their home for personal use.

While you can legally smoke once the law hits the books, that doesn’t mean your boss has to allow it. As 7 Action News has previously reported, there will be questions about whether bosses will green-light their employees to smoke after-hours. There is some belief that a number of employees will turn a blind-eye, but other employers are faced with HR challenges because of contracts that dictate a drug-free workforce.

Michigan is the first state in the Midwest to legalize recreational marijuana.
